A Radical Rethink
of how we use landfill sites for good
Based on the concept of the ancient midden where waste would provide heat, material to burn and composted biomass, the Sustain Super-Midden is designed to turn landfill sites into energy, heat, food, and fertiliser generating centres for the benefit of the local community.

Paving the way for
LOCAL FOOD & POWER PRODUCTION
Combined with heat extracted from the landfill site, and power from the on-site energy from waste plant, the positively pressured, inflatable growing domes will be kept at a perfect growing temperature for horticulture throughout the seasons. Read more >>
Through a series of wells placed within the landfill, gases from waste decomposition are collected and piped to a central location where it is cleaned and used to fuel a Combined Heat and Power Gas Engine. Read more >>
Using the landfill as a distribution hub, just-in-time food will be delivered daily, reducing food miles and removing the need for large storage and warehousing operations. This approach enables cheaper and more sustainable food. Read more >>
Leachate from landfill can be harvested and is high in phosphates which can be refined into fertiliser, providing a sustainable alternative. Read more >>
Huge CO2 savings

Specifically designed to be biosecure and fully encapsulated, our flexible growing domes will be located on securely sealed landfill cells. Methane gas produced from within these cells will be used to produce sustainable energy and heat, helping to maintain the perfect growing temperature for horticulture throughout the seasons.

From landfill to lettuce
A radical new approach to food production, capable of transforming landfill sites into low carbon, affordable fruit and vegetable production hubs, has been unveiled by Sustain Wiltshire in Royal Wooton Bassett. In a world-first, landfill gas tapped from Crapper and Sons’ landfill site will be turned into heat, power and CO2, to create perfect year-round […]
